Title: Sunset Sentry
Photographer: Houston Vandergriff
Location: Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Caption: We had driven from Aspen to Moab. We had camped near Aspen and had planned to camp in Arches National Park, but the campground was closed for repairs. And it was 106 degrees F. So we called for a room at the local Motel 6 and kept our tent in the trunk. But as the day drew to a close, we decided to make a quick trip across the street from Arches to Canyonlands National Park. Really, the two parks are just a few minutes apart. We drove quickly through the park as the sun sank lower and lower in the sky. As it fell close to the horizon, we parked our car and hiked to the edge of the mesa. The light shifted quickly as Houston took a series of shots. This photo captures the feeling of the heat, the quality of the light, and the majesty of the canyon.
